Weekend trip to Corrour area

Time - Uair

Depart Inverness at about 1730 to drive to Tulloch Station.  Our intention is to get the sleeper train to Corrour.  On Saturday we can ski Beinn na Lap and other hills.  We will return from Corrour by the 2119 train on the Sunday night arriving Tulloch at 2134 and drive home from there.

Meeting location - Àite-coinneachaidh

Tesco Inshes Carpark

Location - Àite

Here

Cost - Cosgais

£45 per person for club members for two night's stay in the youth hostel, breakfasts and dinner on the Saturday night. Train fare in addition paid by yourself (£8 return).  Please note that we will be booking the entire hostel and the club will underwrite this trip financially.

Open to Club members only.

Information - Fiosrachadh

We plan to take the train to Corrour and ski from there.  There are multiple options including the easy Beinn na Lap, the long traverse over Càrn Dearg and Sgòr Gaibhre and even down to Rannoch Station to get the train back.  It should be fun.

Accommodation is to be  the Loch Ossian Youth Hostel. The Corrour Station House can possibly do food for us and is really cosy. The hostel also has full self-catering facilities.

Clearly a trip like this will be weather and snow dependent and if conditions are very poor we may change things.

Length of tour: Various; Beinn na Lap 7.5km return trip with 550 metres of climbing.  Càrn Dearg to Rannoch Station is 14km with 650m metres of ascent.

Amount of climbing: See above.

General terrain: The trip will be snow and weather dependent although we intend to go regardless.  It's a great place and some skiing will get done!

Summary- Geàrr-iomradh

Andy says:

Hi Guys

It's that time of year and at last the snow has arrived, temperatures are dropping and the forecast for the weekend is no bad!

I've been in contact with Chris and still have to decide on Glen Affric or Carn Ban Mor/Great Moss for the Igloo Camping Trip location.

Glen affric is my preffered choice as the walk in is less arduous, snow is reliable and escape to lower levels much easier if severe weather sets in. However I need to confirm snow cover tomorrow but we had snow down to about 300m this morning in Glen Urquhart which suggests our normal build height in Glen Affric of about 2000 - 2500m will be fine. Road access is good.

The Great Moss has also been a favourite location in the past and does give a real sense of arctic wilderness so great for photos! There's sure to be snow but does require a longer trek in and more height gain. Could be a good choice for some skiing.

Let me know if you are still interested in the trip and also if either location is likely to be a problem if chosen. All are welcome to come either for skiing or day out on the hill and maybe help with the building.

The normal arrangement for the trip is for individuals to bring their own lunch and breakfast and any treats. I will bring pasta, sauce, mature cheddar, apple pies, cream, rolls, bacon,  butter, chorizo, cooker, pans and gas.

I'll need to know numbers for the catering so a prompt reply to confirm will be appreciated.

Last year was successful even with limited snow at the build site (see attached photos) and if this is your first trip have a look at the club trips on the Grand Shelters forum under the Trip Reports/Organisations section http://www.grandshelters.com/iglooforum.html

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers

Andy

The Cairngorm Club is the oldest in Scotland and we look forward to visiting their fine establishment.

We plan to ski in the Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag area and then bivvy close to the bottom of the Braveheart Chairlift in honor of William Wallace.

Feel free to dress up as Rob Roy, William Wallace or Dòmhnall MacFhionnlaigh nan Dàn.

You are welcome to ski for the day without the bivvy of course.

The long held ambition of transporting beer to the Braveheart is a driving force behind this expedition.

Tonnes of skiing in the huge corries of Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag.

Time - Uair

Depart Inverness at 0930

Meeting location - Àite-coinneachaidh

Highland Council HQ Carpark

Cost - Cosgais

Information - Fiosrachadh

Essentials:

a) meet at Highland Council carpark in Inverness at 0930 to car-pool, or at the Nevis Range base station at 1100;

b) take camping gear, which means tent/bivi, sleeping bag, camping mat;

c) take whatever food and drink you want up there on Saturday night;

d) if you have a dry-bag to leave stuff in through the day, take it!  If not, ask around and likely someone can lend you one;

e) bring a head-torch if you want to go night-skiing in the Back Corries (highly recommended);

f) bring a big backpack to be able to take all of the above up the lifts with you.

Details:

Ideally, after dinner we will head for a wee night-ski up the corrie behind, perhaps to the col below Summit Gully, for those who have head-torches.

On Sunday, we may go for a ski-tour early in the morning, then pack up the tents and "leave no trace" at the camp-ground, and if the weather is decent and it's running we may be able to get the camping gear out using Braveheart, which is the lazy option.  If it's not, we will ski it all down the valley a bit and then hike up to the Rob Roy lift to get back out.  Less than 1h's walking equals the easiest high-camp you've ever had in the Highlands!
