With winter now showing its best face this midweek day trip was pulled together for those members able to take a midweek day off  and in doing so take advantage of the stellar conditions. The plan was to enjoy the fantastic snow on Carn Liath and make the very most of the day by a full traverse of the mountain.

Some car shuffling was required with 3 vehicles left in the Creag Meagaidh car park and drivers shuttled back to the tour start point at the old quarry just uphill from Glenshero lodge. From there the group were able to put the skis at the cars and on perfect snow made good time to the top of Carn Dubh (767m). Carn Liath is a long SW/NE trending Munro with A’ Bhuidheanach a 3km almost flat plateau above 900m with makes for easy skiing and with a fence line generaky easy navigation. In no time at all we were assembled on the summit in ever improving weather and with a 600m descent to look forward to. A line due south of the cairn was followed into Coille Coire Chrainnaig where tree skiing was briefly enjoyed before the terrain finally forced even the most ambitious to remove skis for the final 1km walk to the cars.

Whilst Carn Liath is a popular ski tour the full traverse takes a little bit of organising but is well worth the extra effort turning a good day into a really great day. The addition of overnight gear would allow the greater traverse including Creag Meagaidh and on west to include Beinn a Chaorainn & Beinn Teallach, one for another club weekend!
